SONGS OF DEVOTION EP LAUNCH – GRACE ELIZABETH HARVEY
Grace Elizabeth Harvey launches her new EP, Songs of Devotion, on Thursday 15th October at Rough Trade Liverpool.
Songs of Devotion was written from deep within the tangles of language and love. Formed by train journeys, second-hand bookshops and borrowed sofas, what has presented itself is a collection of songs as dynamic and exploratory as they are simple and sincere.
With a background as a classical cellist and student of literature and philosophy, Grace unites the traditional with the exploratory to capture deeply moving fragments of our experience, inspired by the likes of Laura Marling, Leonard Cohen and Madison Cunningham.
“Lovely. If you’re in need of a little calm, a little introspection, a little Laura Marling or Joni Mitchell” — Stereogum
The year of her 2025 debut EP, Other Faith, brought two UK-wide tours, including a break into London’s grassroots folk scene, sharing stages with the likes of Chris Brain, Chloe Foy, Josienne Clarke, Villagers and Florist. She won the Young Songwriters Competition in 2025, and has since been awarded the PPL Momentum Accelerator Fund for this upcoming release, Songs of Devotion.
The brand new EP will be launched at Rough Trade Liverpool, on Thursday 15th October, in association with Liverpool’s ‘unplugged heroes’ Mellowtone (LINK: https://liverpoolmusiccity.com/2024/10/17/two-decades-of-mellowtone-liverpools-unplugged-heroes/). Support on the night is from Liverpool Jed Timms, whose shifting chord patterns and yearning melodies offer reflections on love, sorrow and epiphanies at 4am.
Harvey’s Songs of Devotion EP was recorded live at producer Gus White’s residential studio, The Barn, in the Wiltshire countryside, alongside double bassist Sam Crooks and drummer Lloyd Haines. Mixed and mastered to tape, Harvey’s delicate, almost spoken-word delivery sits at the centre of performances shaped by both the sound of language and its meaning; Harvey’s lyrics balancing unusual, ambiguous phrasing with strikingly precise imagery, allowing the cadence of words to become part of the music itself. Using open tunings, informed by her background in Baroque cello, Harvey approaches the guitar as a second melodic voice in her writing, its counter-melodies and harmonic movement becoming as expressive as her lyrics themselves.
With a penchant for exceptionally captivating live performances, receiving praise from national press and grassroots fans alike, Harvey is quickly proving herself to be one of the UK’s finest emerging songsmiths.
“Something quite splendid indeed” — Gideon Coe, BBC Radio 6
