FOR THE LOVE

Have you got the January blues? Well we have the perfect anecdote for you in the shape of LIMF Academy’s For The Love taking place in the Music Room at the Phil on Friday 16th Jan.

I know January is horrible – its cold and gloomy and some of you were probably a bit like myself really shocked that you had to go back to work once New Year was out of the way! And I know we are all skint but the good news is its only a fiver so you have no excuse – get yourself out and enjoy some of the finest music the city has to offer with some of LIMF Academy’s finest graduates performing like you have never seen them before.

What we have for you on this special night is an evening of musical collaborations so you are in for a treat of never seen before unique performances.

Collaborations can be  really exciting  as  recent events prove only too well. One of the biggest music stories to emerge over the Christmas and New Year period was the collaboration between Liverpool rapper EsDeekid and move star Timothee Chalamet. The internet almost exploded when the remix of EsDeekid’s 4 Raws emerged just days before Christmas featuring a new verse by Chalamet and a video featuring both of them. The reason for all the future was that EsDeeKid has within the space of the  six months or so become one of the biggest names in rap while somehow also retaining an air of mystery. Facts about EsDeekid are few and far between  and he performs with a balaclava covering his face and  to his rapid rise rumours abounded about who he actually was. Some said he was  an AI construct. But there was also lots of speculation that he was actually Timothee Chalamet himself – despite the rapper having a broad scouse accent – which was only disproved with the appearance of the remix video.  Whatever the reality EsDeekid is making some of the most vital music of the moment and he probably comes from that renowned musical hotspot of Bootle.

Not all collaborations are as successful as this one. If you put two musical geniuses together in the shape of Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder you would expect something that would inspire the Gods themselves to emerge. But no what we got was Ebony and Ivory!  Two other rock legends Bowie and Jagger got together and came up with … Dancing in the Street.

But sometime collabs can produce real musical magic. Just think of  Beyonce and Jay Z on Crazy in Love or the still great sounding Walk This Way by Aeorsmith and Run DMC which was a genre breaking massive hit. Personally Ive got a soft spot for the magnificent  Yes by Bernard Butler and David McAlmont (and if you have never heard this do yourself a favour and google it now) and grumpy old Van Morrison with the Chieftains on the Irish Heartbeat which brought to life all the Irish classic songs Id grown up listening to in my Irish household.

With the Academy’s For Your Love night I dont think we need have any worries about the quality of the collabs. The Academy has always been keen to  encourage their artists to expand their musical horizons and work with other artists, even those who are working in an entirely different genre and this line up is genuinely intriguing. I cant wait to see what Ni Maxine and Immi Dash  come up with and   I’ve already heard one track from the Koj and Astles partnership which  was stunning.    Michael Aldag is doing his first Liverpool show in ages  performing with the multi talented Tee. Completing the line up are collabs between Tonia and two blinks I love you and Amber Jay (another one who I don’t think has played in Liverpool for ages) and Bethane.

So the offer is there. Do you want to sit at home being miserable on a Friday night in January or see some unique musical collaborations from some of the city’s finest emerging artists?
