ARTIST SPOTLIGHT – JETTA

As Liverpool gears up for BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend, we caught up with Jetta — the proudly Scouse singer, producer, and genre-bending trailblazer, ahead of her hometown performance, to talk creativity, chaos, and coming full circle.

You grew up in Liverpool — how did the city shape your early relationship with music?

I started in a-cappella choirs from young and then found my place in the Liverpool music scene – my first solo gig was at E.B.G.B.S

When did you first realise you were an artist?

One really hot summer when everyone else was outside and I was glued to my laptop and keyboard – losing social skills but gaining a lot of musical ones – not much has changed to be honest – haha.

We know you have a distinctive voice, and your production style has become a major part of your sound. How did that develop?

I taught myself how to produce by layering a-cappella harmonies in Logic and then turning those into instruments.

Your track sicklysweet went viral last summer. How was that?

It really popped off, didn’t it? It started as a tongue-in-cheek love song really — a candy crush. Then Tobiahs made a remix – everyone’s lovin it – it pretty much blew up overnight.

Your 2024 album Relax, The House Is On Fire felt like a big statement. What did it mean to you?

It’s my first album – self-made. The concept is ‘songs from the chair’ and the main character – me – is the producer/scientist at the centre of it all. And then there are multiple other characters unfolding throughout the album – the main sentiment is “everything’s fine, it’s not ok.”

You’re back on stage in Liverpool for Big Weekend. How does that feel?

It’s a mixed bag – I’m dead excited of course but I’ve gotta be honest, I’m nervous as well. It’s a big gig and I’ve been solo, sat in the chair for 18 months, haha.

Has your creative process changed over time?

For the most part, it stays the same – I’ve just got more toys to play with and stories to tell.

What’s next for Jetta?

I’ve just finished making a mashups album of ‘Relax, The House Is On Fire’ – mixing my songs with other artists – kinda like a remix album – so I’m doing that as an online series at the minute. Gonna give one of them a first play at Big Weekend.
