FROM LOCKDOWN TO AIRWAVES: THE RISE OF SVARA RADIO
SVARA is Liverpool’s alternative radio station, which streams live daily from the Baltic Triangle.
Despite it’s popularity with creatives and the music scene, it sits nonchalantly in the cut omnipresent and omnipotent for those it was made for. We thought it was time we spoke to the brains behind the platform.
What’s SVARA Radio and how did it come about?
In the depths of the lockdown, when the world seemed to stand still we decided to create a platform that would not only showcase the talents of DJs, creatives, and artists but also breathe life into the hidden gems of world music that rarely grace the mainstream airwaves. SVARA – a space for music enthusiasts and a symbol of change through music.
Driven by our love for music and a desire to uplift the voices and sounds that often go unheard, we created a space where artists, both established and emerging, could share their craft with the world. Our aim? To raise the frequency, stimulate thought, and drive change through the universal language of music. It’s not about following the mainstream trends but rather exploring the uncharted waters of global soundscapes. From traditional tunes to experimental beats, the platform opens the door to music that transcends boundaries.
How did you come up with the name?
SVARA means perfect musical frequency in Sanskrit an ancient language.
How does Liverpool influence what you do at SVARA Radio?
Liverpool is a musically rich city and we believe this wasn’t represented by any mainstream stations operating here.
What’s been your favourite moment in the history of SVARA Radio?
A stand out moment was our third birthday party in our new home surrounded by our friends and family.
What are the challenges of running a radio station here in Liverpool?
The challenges are constantly upon us as any independent radio station with so many moving parts but because we believe in our brand so much it makes it all worth it.
What’s your ambition with SVARA?
Keep on growing keep on expanding and connecting more people through the music.
What’s coming up soon for SVARA?
We are excited to be working with BOXPARK Liverpool with our new Friday night residency at the new site.
