MY PLAYLIST – RICH TURVEY
We sat down with Liverpool-based writer, producer and co-owner of Kempston Street Studios, Rich Turvey. He’s picked 5 songs that are significant to him and 5 of his own productions – in his own words, “quite the task on the sly!”
1. Radiohead – No Surprises
Probably my favourite band and favourite tune from my favourite Radiohead album.
2. Massive Attack – Teardrop
Love the piano chords in this song against the trip-hop beat. Massively influential for me as a producer/musician.
3. The Walkmen – The Rat
The holy grail for anyone into indie music really.
4. Miles Davis – All Blues
Probably my favourite album of all time. ‘Kind of Blue’ is a real go-to for me, for any mood really.
5. Pink Floyd – The Great Gig In The Sky
I remember hearing this song for the first time. I had to listen to it about 10 times in a row because I still couldn’t believe what I’d just heard.
6. Blossoms – Charlemagne
One of my proudest productions from our time at Parr Street Studios, Liverpool. It felt like anything was possible that year.
7. Oscar Lang – Apple Juice
Influenced by Beck and hip-hop beats, this song started as a jam over a loop and went from there.
8. Rachel Chinouriri – The Hills
I was sent the demo of this song and I remember hearing the first 3 seconds of it and thinking, ‘yeah I’m in’. The intro is still the same audio from that demo played by LA producer Aaron Shadrow.
9. Pixey – Melody
Pixey is a fellow producer and lover of trip-hop, so it was great to work on something that drew from those influences but with a modern take.
10. The Coral – Cycles Of The Seasons
I’d had the chords for the verse of this song since I was a young kid learning the guitar, but never really found a home for them. I played them to James Skelly in the studio and he knew exactly what to do – he then took the song to another place with the recording.
